Community Celebration Dinner

The Community Celebration Dinner began in 2003 for the purpose of bringing staff members, who often don’t get the opportunity to attend MLK programs held during the day, and students together to share in the celebration of the legacy of Dr. King. This is an inclusive event so faculty members and members in the community are welcome to attend. Classes are cancelled on the national day of observance, most dining halls across campus are closed. However, thanks to the Division of Housing and Food Services, they have been gracious enough to open and decorate the dining hall in Akers and provide an outstanding buffet dinner for our guests. Guests that want to attend the dinner must pre-register. One “free” ticket is available to MSU staff, students and faculty. Additional tickets can be purchased for $9.50. All reserved tickets will be at the door.

Commemorative March

Since 1980, it has become a tradition for MSU faculty, administrators, students and staff to gather on campus and march to Beaumont Tower to pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since 2006, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, of which Dr. King was affiliated, honor this most notable member by serving as the Grand Marshall of the march. We welcome the public to join us to be a part of this time-honored civil rights tradition, particularly this year in recognition of the recent election of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) as the 44th President of the United States.

Student Leadership Conference

For MSU students that want to present at the conference, think about “change” as it relates to the legacy that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. left for us over 40 years ago—nonviolence, social and economic justice, civil rights, and equity for all, and submit topics and content for presentations that focus on the impact that these issues have on us today, along with current and future efforts that are needed to fulfill the Dr. King’s legacy. The MLK Student Leadership Conference is a great opportunity for MSU students, faculty and staff to come together to engage in critical conversations about issues that we face as a nation and throughout the world.

For more information about how to get involved in the conference and other student-led MLK activities, please contact Robert Easterly or 517-353-3922, in the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives.
