MSU Board of Trustees Scheduled to Vote on Gender Identity
On Tuesday, March 13, 2007 and Tuesday, March 20, Faculty Council and Academic Council unanimously voted to support the Second Ad Hoc Committee on Gender Identity's recommendation to add gender identity to MSU's Anti-Discrimination Policy. On April 13, 2007, the Board of Trustees will decide whether or not to amend the ADP to include gender identity. Currently, gender identity is included in MSU's Anti-Harassment Policy. I Stop Hate : MSU United Charity Walk for Inclusion
I Stop Hate : MSU United has postponed its Charity Walk for Inclusion until April 15, 2007. The Walk, which benefits the American Red Cross and the MSU Student Food Bank, will start and end at the MSU Auditorium. Check-in for the Walk is at 9 A.M. inside the Auditorium; the Walk itself begins at 10:00 A.M. Registration and fundraising forms for the walk can be downloaded as a Word file here or online (site best viewed in Mozilla Firefox). CRASH Dinner, Film, and Discussion
On Thursday, April 12 from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M., the Honors College, James Madison College, and the College of Engineering will sponsor a showing of CRASH, the movie, followed by a free dinner and discussion of the film in 207 and 208 Eustace Cole Hall. Representatives from I Stop Hate : MSU United will also be present at the event to help inform those in attendance about ways they can help support inclusion on campus.
Gender Identity Committee to Present Report
On Tuesday, March 13, 2007, the Second Ad Hoc Committee on Gender Identity received a unanimous vote of support for its report from MSU's Faculty Council. On Tuesday, March 20, the Committee will present before Academic Council. The report recommends that MSU add gender identity to its Anti-Discrimination Policy. Upcoming Conference: "Race in 21st Century America"
April 4-6, 2007, MSU will hold its ninth annual "Race in 21st Century America" Conference. This year's conference theme is "Youth and the Future of America." Except for lunches ($30.00 for two lunches on April 5-6), all conference activities are free for MSU faculty, staff, and students. However, everyone must register by March 31. On March 22nd and 23rd Andres Lara (the Cuban Guy) will present two workshops for MSU students this week, “How to Move Forward when You Feel like Quitting: Becoming Unstoppable” (recommended for students that are having difficulties with their grades) and “How to Influence Others with Charisma: How to Speak so Others Listen, Follow, & Take Responsibility” (recommended for student leaders). Bias Incident Reporting System
President Simon has noted "that cross-cultural interactions may sometimes create moments of surprise or discomfort. But when perspectives clash, we have an individual and shared responsibility to guard against behaviors that demean or otherwise harm individuals and our community. A strong campus community is characterized by respect for, and civility toward one another." Occasionally, individuals act in ways that do not demonstrate these values. On Nov. 7, 2006, a majority of Michigan voters passed Proposal 2, an amendment to the State of Michigan Constitution that bans affirmative action programs that give preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin. 2007 Dia de la Mujer Conference: "Madres de la Causa"
Saturday, February 24, the 14th annual Dia de la Mujer Conference will be held at the MSU Kellogg Center from 7:15 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The Conference, which includes continental breakfast and lunch, is free for MSU students. Non-MSU students and seniors can register for 10 dollars; general admission is 25 dollars.
